Mel Brooks musical Young Frankenstein is the latest victim of falling ticket sales on Broadway - it will wave goodbye to New York in January.

Brooks' adaptation of the 1974 movie he wrote with Gene Wilder has been one of the top draws in Manhattan's theatre district over the past year - but sales have slumped in recent months, as cash-strapped New Yorkers abandon the theatre.

A host of shows are scheduled to close in January, including Spamalot, Hairspray and Spring Awakening.

Bummer. :(

How many of you have had a chance to see Spaceballs: The Animated Series yet? What are your thoughts?

Personally, I think it's hilarious. It's done some really funny parodies of films and other popular media (my two favorites so far are The Skroobinator and Grand Theft Starship). It's far edgier than the Spaceballs film was, which is refreshing; it's almost like we suddenly have Blazing Saddles-era Mel back again. And since Mel himself is back to voice Skroob and Yogurt we have the pleasure of hearing him say things I never thought I'd ever hear him say (such as "wankers", for example, which had me laughing for five minutes straight). I don't what held the series up for so long, but I'm glad they're finally airing it.

Now I want it on DVD. Hopefully we won't have to wait forever for THAT, too.

R.I.P. Harvey Korman [02 Jun 2008|03:29pm]

Actor Harvey Korman dies in Los Angeles
May 29, 2008, 6:02 PM EST
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Harvey Korman, the tall, versatile comedian who won four Emmys for his outrageously funny contributions to "The Carol Burnett Show" and on the big screen in "Blazing Saddles," died Thursday. He was 81.

Korman died at UCLA Medical Center after suffering complications from the rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm four months ago, his family said in a statement released by the hospital.

His daughter, Kate Korman, said in the statement that it was a "miracle" that her father had survived the aneurysm at all, and that he had several major operations.

"Tragically, after such a hard fought battle he passed away," she said.

A natural second banana, Korman gained attention on "The Danny Kaye Show," appearing in skits with the star. He joined the show in its second season in 1964 and continued until it was canceled in 1967. That same year he became a cast member in the first season of "The Carol Burnett Show."

Burnett and Korman developed into the perfect pair with their burlesques of classic movies such as "Gone With the Wind" and soap operas like "As the World Turns" (their version was called "As the Stomach Turns").

Another recurring skit featured them as "Ed and Eunice," a staid married couple who were constantly at odds with the wife's mother (a young Vickie Lawrence in a gray wig). In "Old Folks at Home," they were a combative married couple bedeviled by Lawrence as Burnett's troublesome young sister.

Burnett was devastated by the news, said her assistant, Angie Horejsi.

"She loved Harvey very much," Horejsi said. She said Burnett had not yet made a statement.

Korman revealed the secret to the long-running show's success in a 2005 interview.

"We were an ensemble, and Carol had the most incredible attitude. I've never worked with a star of that magnitude who was willing to give so much away."

After 10 successful seasons, he left in 1977 for his own series. Dick Van Dyke took his place, but the chemistry was lacking and the Burnett show was canceled two years later. "The Harvey Korman Show" also failed, as did other series starring the actor.

"It takes a certain type of person to be a television star," he said in that 2005 interview. "I didn't have whatever that is. I come across as kind of snobbish and maybe a little too bright. ... Give me something bizarre to play or put me in a dress and I'm fine."

His most memorable film role was as the outlandish Hedley Lamarr (who was endlessly exasperated when people called him Hedy) in Mel Brooks' 1974 Western satire, "Blazing Saddles."

He also appeared in the Brooks comedies "High Anxiety," "The History of the World Part I" and "Dracula: Dead and Loving It," as well as two "Pink Panther" moves, "Trail of the Pink Panther" in 1982 and "Curse of the Pink Panther" in 1983.

Korman's other films included "Gypsy," "Huckleberry Finn" (as the King), "Herbie Goes Bananas" and "Bud and Lou" (as legendary straightman Bud Abbott to Buddy Hackett's Lou Costello). He also provided the voice of Dictabird in the 1994 live-action feature "The Flintstones."

In television, Korman guest-starred in dozens of series including "The Donna Reed Show," "Dr. Kildare," "Perry Mason," "The Wild Wild West," "The Muppet Show," "The Love Boat," "The Roseanne Show" and "Burke's Law."

In their '70s, he and Tim Conway, one of his Burnett show co-stars, toured the country with their show "Tim Conway and Harvey Korman: Together Again." They did 120 shows a year, sometimes as many as six or eight in a weekend.

Harvey Herschel Korman was born Feb. 15, 1927, in Chicago. He left college for service in the U.S. Navy, resuming his studies afterward at the Goodman School of Drama at the Chicago Art Institute. After four years, he decided to try New York.

"For the next 13 years I tried to get on Broadway, on off-Broadway, under or beside Broadway," he told a reporter in 1971.

He had no luck and had to support himself as a restaurant cashier. Finally, in desperation, he and a friend formed a nightclub comedy act.

"We were fired our first night in a club, between the first and second shows," he recalled.

After returning to Chicago, Korman decided to try Hollywood, reasoning that "at least I'd feel warm and comfortable while I failed."

For three years he sold cars and worked as a doorman at a movie theater. Then he landed the job with Kaye.

In 1960 Korman married Donna Elhart and they had two children, Maria and Christopher. They divorced in 1977. Two more children, Katherine and Laura, were born of his 1982 marriage to Deborah Fritz.

In addition to his daughter Kate, he is survived by his wife and the three other children.

Mel Brooks: It's Good to be an American.
"It’s good to be an American." With those words Mel Brooks, one of only a few people to win an Emmy, an Oscar, a Tony, and a Grammy, accepted another award on April 17 at Ellis Island: The 2008 Ellis Island Family Heritage Award in entertainment. Presented by The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, the annual award recognizes Ellis Island/Port of New York immigrants or their descendents who have made their mark on American life.

At Last the 1948 Show [30 Dec 2007|08:20pm]

mattphillips11

I just got the 2 DVD At Last the 1948 Show set for Christmas. I had never heard of it before. Along with Do Not Adjust Your Set, it was an immediate precursor to Monty Python's Flying Circus. At Last the 1948 Show featured the sketch comedy talents of John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Tim Brooke-Taylor, and MARTY FELDMAN! I've seen one 'episode' so far, and Marty is phenomenal, absolutely hilarious. Anyone here familiar with the show? (The other show, by the way, included Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin.)

I grew up watching Robin Hood: Men in Tights, it's gotta be one of my favorite movies of all time. I've got it memorized more than Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

And since there isn't a community for the movie (as far as i could find anyway) i figured i might share this icon i made a few days ago with this community.

"My full name is Will Scarlett O'Hara....we're from Georgia."

enjoy, uhm and credit me in your description if you chose to use it.

"IGOR, IT'S... not well received..." [09 Nov 2007|04:43pm]

the_terrible
Critics are puttin' on the razz for Mel Brooks' attempt to recreate his 1974 comedy Young Frankenstein as a Broadway musical. "The show takes many of the elements that made The Producers such a delight and then saps them of their joy by overselling them," Ben Brantley wrote in the New York Times. Out of town critics who converged on Broadway for the opening were even harsher. In the Chicago Tribune, Chris Jones called it "a colossal -- and, boy, is this show a monster -- disappointment." Peter Marks in the Washington Post described the show as "a teeter-tottering patchwork of slipshod gags, recycled dance routines and tinny tunes." Several critics note that the show opened with terrific buzz and such high expectations that few doubted it would sell out -- even with orchestra seats going for $450 at the box office and for thousands of dollars through scalpers. But as Charles McNulty in the Los Angeles Times observed: "We enter wanting to bust a gut, so no wonder we're a little let down when we leave with only a nostalgic grin." And Louise Kennedy concluded in the Boston Globe that the show "has millions of dollars' worth of pyrotechnics and other special effects with which to light up the stage, and it deploys them with abandon. Unfortunately, though, that doesn't mean that lightning strikes twice."

...ouch.

Ladies and gentlemen, it just gets better [15 Jun 2007|09:15pm]

the_terrible
Veteran actress Cloris Leachman has challenged theatre star Mel Brooks to a fight so she can prove she is healthy enough for a role in his forthcoming Broadway musical Young Frankenstein. Leachman, 81, was devastated to learn she had been snubbed for the part of Frau Blucher, Dr. Frankenstein's household servant - a role she originally played in the 1974 movie version of Young Frankenstein - despite having reportedly breezed through the audition process. Theatre insiders told New York Post's gossip column, Page Six, "(Leachman had) a wonderful audition... She was involved in a workshop recently and everyone loved her... but it was obvious she was too old." And Brooks, 80, fears the Broadway musical would be too strenuous for the star. He tells former industry columnist Army Archerd, "We're afraid the show might stop her - it could kill her... We don't want her to die on stage." But Leachman's representative Steve Rohr says, "Cloris challenges Mel to three rounds in the ring, and we'll see who's left standing."

BLUCHER! [13 Jun 2007|11:12pm]

the_terrible
Cloris Leachman, who played Frau Blucher in Mel Brooks's 1974 comedy Young Frankenstein, is reportedly upset that Brooks did not cast her in the Broadway musical version of the film and is lobbying Brooks to change his mind, the New York Post reported today. According to the newspaper, Leachman, 81, has enlisted former Variety columnist Army Archerd in her campaign. The Post's "Page Six" column quoted insiders as saying that Leachman had "a wonderful audition. ... She was involved in a workshop recently and everyone loved her." But Brooks reportedly told Archerd, "We're afraid the show might stop her -- it could kill her." And a spokesperson for the production said, "In the end producers thought the physical demands of doing eight performances a week were too much to ask of her."
